Chinatown Birmingham

by Jo Kenny

We’ve visited Birmingham a couple of times this year with friends, with each visit we’ve found ourselves lining our stomachs in Chinatown and nursing our hangovers the next morning… in Chinatown! Here’s a couple of recommendations if you’re in the area:

I love that our waitress recognised us when we returned a couple of months later; our prior dinner & brunch visit obviously stuck with her! Ocean Dragon is a big restaurant with nice furnishings and a decent menu. Food is served mega quick and their sharing sushi platters in particular look great. I opted for an individual sushi board of salmon sashimi and tuna nigiri.

Not as delicately cut as is usually expected of Japanese cuisine but nice, thick slices of fresh fish nonetheless. The salmon in particular is great.

Bento boxes are always ideal for those who can’t make up their mind and fancy a bit of everything. Mr YDS loves the miso soup that comes with it, convinced it soothes his hangovers as well!

Topokki

I lost my Korean food V-plates in here! It’s a great restaurant; very trendy and just a really nice space to be in. The menu is simple and very good value: 10% off for cash payments too.

Honestly the next time you’re hungover try some fresh East Asian food like a ramen instead of the typical greasy Chinese takeaway, it’ll change your mind forever!

I love love love sushi! You should give Rofuto a try – it’s pretty much hands down my favourite sushi restaurant in Birmingham! http://rofuto.co.uk/
