Flavoured oil is great for.. well.. flavouring! It’s handy because it helps take out a step; with the taste locked inside the oil it’ll give your food an extra kick without having to faff about with chopping up more ingredients. We bought some flavoured oils in the Summer which recently ran out so thought we’d have a go at making our own. It’s mega simple and you can use any oils & flavours you like. Try to pick ingredients that will compliment your day to day cooking.
- 1 air tight bottle (mine is from Ikea)
- 1 bottle of oil
- Herbs or spices: chilli, thyme, rosemary, garlic*, lemon, peppercorns etc
I’ve been loving rapeseed oil recently because it can stand higher temperatures than olive oil, making it great to cook with. Here I used Borderfields, I love their branding!
I filled my bottle with smoked garlic cloves and fresh thyme. Isn’t it pretty? You get a handy ingredient and a kitchen ornament all in one!
Edit 06.04.15: Since writing this post I’ve been researching more into flavoured oils and want to make everyone aware of a rare, but serious form of food poisoning which can occur when flavouring oil with garlic. It’s called ‘botulism‘ and is a bacteria which can grow when there is no oxygen present and no acidic preservative has been added. If you do chose to flavour your oil with garlic, please make a much smaller batch, keep it refrigerated and consume within 1 week.
