I was doing so well weaning myself out of holiday mode. Until I went for my lunch that is, where I found a shiny new chocolate bar staring at me by the till. Usually I’m not swayed by last minute purchases, but this new addition to the Cadbury family had me very curious!
The packaging looks like something from Candy Crush, don’t you think?!
Opening it up I found those familiar little Cadbury squares had been replaced by weird, textured shapes. This chocolate bar gets weirder by the second!
I like that you can see little dashes of colour just poking up through the surface. To be honest I’m not sure what I really expected this to taste like and I guess that’s entirely why I bought it. Jelly popping candy shells sounds horribly contrary, but it turned out to be a perfect description.
Firstly, there’s little grains of crackly space candy running throughout the chocolate. A generous amount of it too: enough to make you pause with every bite to open your mouth and listen to the racket going on inside!
Then there’s jelly beans, little chewy fruity ones! As far as I know, Cadbury are one of the only folk to combine jelly beans with chocolate, and it works! Chocolate bars can get awfully sickly, but the fruity hit makes it kind of lighter.
Finally, the crunch comes from crispy sugar shells; the love child of Smarties minis and Rice Krispies if you will. They’re the colourful little guys you can see running through the bar.
So it’s blatantly a limited run and will never make it into the chocolate hall of fame with the big players, but I’m SO glad Cadbury brought these Marvellous Creations out to play. I’m one of those people who prefers sweets to chocolate and bringing the element of sweets into chocolate I think is brilliant. In fact, if I could liken this chocolate bar to anything, it would be when you shove a handful of Pick n Mix in your gob: it’s a mish mash of rich, fruity, crispy and chewy that just works. I’ll definitely be buying one to brighten up my lunch again! 235 calories well spent.
